The other day I was wondering how the advertisements propagating the "Men would be Men" mantra, are on the rise. How could it be so funny to forget your wife's name!! How come its such a given that you don't want to visit your wife's parents! And at the other end of the spectrum are the cement ads sporting a model coming out of the foamy ocean in a bikini....Give me a break!!
A multitude of advertisements portray a family where the mothers are serving/cooking food, washing clothes, looking after the ill children. Just one advertisement dared to scream back at a husband unable to locate his socks, only just!!
Haven't seen a woman advertise a Motor Cycle, haven't seen a male model promoting the ready made masalas or soaps or detergents.Or a woman trying to finalise on an insurance policy her family needs?!
The thing is we all have this concept of girl thing boy thing completely en-grained in our minds so deep we cant see the world in any other light.I once caught one of my woman friends telling her 5 year old son not to play with dolls as it was a girl thing. Have heard a lot of people trying to tell the girls what is not their thing.
A middle aged housewife in a small town once told me how she ensured her male and female children had the same rules, the same freedom , the same responsibilities to ensure they grew up equal in their abilities only different in their personalities.
I guess this whole fuss about Venus and Mars needs to be de-glamourised. Lets just treat each other as a person with likes and dislikes rather than gender typecasts. Respect and tolerance could start right there and a lot of hypocrisy we live with wouldn't be necessary. No girl thing - Boy thing in my house for sure!!
